ABSTRACT
The problem of optimising the performance of thermal energy systems is considered in different ways. Today decisions concerning energy systems are mainly based on economic analyses, paying minor attention to the Laws of Thermodynamics. This represents a serious conceptual drawback to the possibility of increasing thermal efficiency, reducing pollution emission and making a correct use of energy sources. After a short overview of the methods present in the literature, concerning the optimum design of energy systems, a simplified tool for the optimisation of the energy plants operating parameters, is described. It involves the First and the Second Law of Thermodynamics. Three different objective functions are proposed. The third one can lead toward a Thermoeconomic description of the system. The case study of a combined cycle power plant is used to test the method, to discuss the results and to explain the meaning of each function. The proposed functions appear to be self-consistent and permit to obtain optimised solutions not dependent on the boundary conditions imposed.
