ABSTRACT
Reported here are conducting polymer coated fabrics with remarkable transducing properties in terms of strain gauge factor and temperature coefficient of resistance. They enable the realization of truly wearable instrumented garments capable of recording proprioceptive maps with no discomfort for the subject and negligible motion artifacts caused by sensor-body mechanical mismatch. In fact, application fields of this type of sensor are addressed in privileged way to biomedical monitoring of the posture and gesture of the body. After a detailed description of the fabrication of the fabric sensor we report time, temperature and mechanical characterizations. In particular we focused our attention on the analysis of the piezoresistive response of the sensor in order to code the strain externally imposed. When the sensor is subjected to a stretching the resistance decreases, but the settling time in order to appreciate the difference between the initial and final value is too long. Also, we experimentally verified that a step strain produces a response with a peak after few hundreds of milliseconds and a subsequent relaxation. Although the initial and final values and the magnitude of the peak is strongly dependent on the aging of the sensor, we have proved that the area under the response to a step strain is age invariant. By using this results we have experimentally characterized the mechanical deformation imposed to the fabrics in term of the response area, and then, by a triangular approximation, we have developed an algorithm to detect the strain applied in real time.
